The Rievaulx Terraces in North York Moors National Park

The Rievaulx Terraces in North York Moors National Park

If you’re looking for peace and quiet while admiring ancient buildings that have stood the test of time, then visiting the North York Moors National Park to delight in the sights offered by the Rievaulx Terraces is just the thing to do. Treat yourself to the sweeping views of the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, nestled in the valley and framed by the stunning North York Moors.

These 18th-century terraces invite you to step back in time where the aristocracy once strolled along their manicured pathways, soaking in the idyllic scenery. With classical temples, sweeping woodland vistas, and the tranquil atmosphere of the North Yorkshire countryside, the Rievaulx Terraces are a hidden gem, perfect if you want to explore the harmonious blend of nature and history in this beautiful corner of (almost) untouched England.

About the Rievaulx Terraces

The Rievaulx Terraces were created in the 1750s by Thomas Duncombe ll and is inspired by classical landscape design. Moreover, the terraces were built to provide picturesque views of Rievaulx Abbey’s ruins, a prominent Cistercian abbey dissolved in the 16th century. When this garden was created, it was fashionable for the English elite to develop gardens emulating the Italian landscape style that evoked a romantic nostalgia.

So, what makes the Rievaulx Terraces so special, even years and years after its creation? Firstly, it offers breathtaking views of the abbey’s ruins and the surrounding valley. Secondly, the landscape includes two long grassy terraces, each offering distinct vantage points of the valley below. As a result, the layout of the Rievaulx Terraces allows you to enjoy leisurely routes for walking and taking in the scenery.

Walking up the Rievaulx Terraces

The Rievaulx Terraces are structured in such a way that, yes, you will be walking around, but you will thoroughly enjoy every second. You won’t even know you’re walking as much as you are. The journey through time starts at the entrance and then continues along the terrace paths and culminates at two remarkable temples – the Tuscan Temple and the Ionic Temple.

The Ionic Temple is elaborate and was used historically as a dining room for entertaining guests. Inside, a world of beauty awaits you to explore with its historical exhibitions that shed light on how the English elites hosted parties all those years ago. The Tuscan Temple is inspired by ancient Roman architecture and serves as an elegant architectural anchor at the end of one terrace, completing the aesthetic of the landscape. It’s pretty to look at, which is precisely why it was built. However, you won’t only have the buildings to gaze at during your walk.

The North York Moors National Park

The North York Moors National Park is managed by the National Trust, meaning it has undertaken the extensive challenge of restoring and conserving the site’s historical and ecological integrity. The park is near Helmsley’s village in North Yorkshire, where boats are rolling moorlands (which turn a vivid purple when the heather blooms in late summer), scenic dales, ancient woodlands, and coastal cliffs. This park exists for those passionate about nature, history, and outdoor adventurers. The park’s ancient woodlands and planted forests cover Duncombe Park and Forge Valley.

Here, you’ll likely have the luck of spotting various wildlife and bird species. There are also river valleys and dales, such as Ryedale and Eskdale, that you can choose to visit. The park is also home to more than just the Rievaulx Terraces. It is also home to the Byland Abbey, the Bronze Age burial mounds, Iron Age hill forts, and Roman roads. But, I have saved the best for last.

When it comes to the park’s outdoor activities, you can indulge in hiking and walking, cycling, horse riding, and water sports. Popular hiking and walking trails include the Cleveland Way and the Lyke Wake Walk, a challenging trek, but a worthwhile one. Water sports include canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding, and if you’re feeling adventurous, try exploring Scaling Dam and Cod Beck Reservoir.

Hi there! I’m Megan, an absolute lover of words, literature, books, stories, anything that has to do with writing, reading, imagining. Because of my passion, I decided to make writing my life, and with that, I decided to study BA Languages at the University of Pretoria and am happy to report that I made my dream come true by graduating and becoming a travel writer. During my final year I wrote for my campus newspaper, the PDBY, where I learned to trust my writing voice. Now, as I sit here writing my petit little bio, I feel more in love with writing than I’ve ever been. Turns out, like much of my personality, my writing can equally showcase both the calm and put-together, as well as the crazy.
