House of Rituals: Is it Amsterdam’s New Wellness Hub?

Welcome to the House of Rituals

Back in 2022, the House of Rituals opened its first two of four floors. Situated in the heart of Amsterdam, this wellness institution beckons to all who crave luxury products, indulgent body treatments, and inspiring wellness products to make life even more worthwhile. This store, slash spa, is different from your typical wellness institution. It has a café, a restaurant, a spa, a ‘mind spa’ and an entire retail section for all things wholesome.

The House of Rituals, to get the logistics out of the way, is located on Spui 10 in the bustling centre of Amsterdam. This wellness hub also has a 4.6-star rating out of 832 Google reviews and is open from 10 am to 7 pm Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10 am to 9 pm on Thursdays, and 11 am to 7 pm on Sundays and Mondays.

Raymond Cloosterman, the founder of Rituals, has stated that he wants his customers to feel excited, a little overwhelmed, but mostly welcome when entering his store. So, without further delay, let’s venture into the House of Rituals and see why it is a must-visit destination in Amsterdam, even tough it is “just a store”. Also, if you want to learn more about Amsterdam, visit its official tourism page here. Now, let’s begin!

An Overview of the House of Rituals

Let me be honest: visiting the House of Rituals will prove to be an event all on its own. You will have a great time with all the colours jumping out at you, the playful architecture of the stand, and even the shop’s location. Even the check-out counter has an interactive section to keep you on your toes.

Because Rituals, the company, adores the discipline of mindfulness, they have an entire cabinet dedicated to it, called The Art of Soulful Living. When you complete your purchase, you will have the opportunity to go to the cabinet and inspect the 13 elements of soulful living inscribed on the boards of the cabinet.

These elements are laid out as the orienting lines of a compass, with Love at the centre, guiding the needle to Compassion, Kindness, Authenticity, and more. Then, when you’re ready, you can push the button on the base, and swoosh is the magic sound you’ll hear.

As soon as your needle lands on one of these words, a magic drawer opens, and you can then take home a card that delves into the art of soulful living with whatever behavioural element it has landed on. Interestingly, House of Rituals has won its place among the Top 10 Best Stores in the World in 2021 by the Retail Furniture Institute.

The House of Rituals’ Restaurant

Rouhi, the restaurant at House of Rituals, translates to ‘my soul’ in Arabic. In this dome of wellness and luxury, what you eat is what you are; in this case, it’s healthy. It is food for the soul. Raymond’s favourite style of food is Asian food, so it’s only fitting to have some signature Asian dishes on the menu, right?

We all know how tiring a day full of retail therapy can get, and House of Rituals has its customers at the forefront of everything they do. So, you can stop at Rouhi for a bounce-back lunch when the fatigue hits without ever leaving the store. Relax in your chair and soak up the warm ambience and lively interior. Allow the servers to pamper you with the best food in Amsterdam, and get ready to explore the rest of what House of Rituals offers.

Mind Oasis at the House of Rituals

Situated on the third floor of the building, the first-in-the-world mind spa sanctuary offers a genuinely unique way of winding down one’s thoughts. The mind-spa is groundbreaking in what it provides. As you enter the ‘Brain Bar’, you are encouraged to sit, put on your wrist monitor to see your heart rate, and follow along with the computer’s exercises.

Your heart is connected to your nervous system, so the wrist monitor can analyse your bodily functions as you interact with the screen. The mind spa also houses four sleeping bots, which are futuristic-looking with their design yet subtle and calming with their effect on those who venture into the state of relaxation.
These pods are fascinating.

House of Rituals allows 25 minutes within these pods, inducing a state of meditation and relaxation with its zero-gravity chairs, ambient lighting, and sound-proof headphones. You then sleep for 25 minutes, but because of the science behind the pods, your 25-minute nap is now equivalent to 4 hours of deep sleep. Groundbreaking! The sleep pod section is famously attributed to giving the best brain massages, and I totally need to get my brain massaged, too!

There are even more sections to explore, such as the breathing sections, meditation around the ‘campfire’ section, and the breathing bubble section. These sonic chairs are backed by science and based on the Wim Hof method. The sessions in these pod chairs last about 15 to 20 minutes. Be sure to book your seat at Mind Spa’s reception.

Body Spa

At the House of Rituals’ body spa, you can book a hand, foot, foam, or body massage and beauty treatments like brow shaping, nail buffing, lash tinting, and beyond. Be sure to book a foot massage and a pedicure at the foot spa section, where you are afforded the best views of Amsterdam. Relaxing in style is now an official tourist trend in Amsterdam thanks to House of Rituals, so if you’re visiting this vibrant city, be sure to set aside at least half a day to explore this house thoroughly.

While you wait for your nails to dry or feel like taking a rest, you can lie down on their hydro-massage beds for a fully clothed massage. These beds are warm and comforting and provide a robust body massage as you hear waves booming from the body spa’s ambient playlist.

Something groundbreaking in Amsterdam’s House of Rituals is its hammam sanctuary. Hammam treatments are basically you being washed by a professional, and they date back hundreds of years. They originate from the Middle East and are heavily influenced by Middle Eastern culture and traditions. If you want to know more about Hammam, otherwise known as the Turkish Bath, you can learn more here.

The Luxury First Floor at House of Rituals

The first floor of the House of Rituals holds all the luxury products you can take home with you. They have a ‘create your own candle’ section on this floor, where you can choose your 24-carrot, gold-plated container to fill to the brim with luxury candle scents. So cool! Then, just across from this ‘make-your-own candle’ section, you will stumble upon the House of Rituals bespoke ‘Eau de parfum’ section.

Create your personal fragrance with their short, three-question form. After this, three small bottles of perfume to your left will light up. These three world-class fragrances are then for you to try, followed by choosing your bottle, then choosing your talisman (a sort of gemstone hanging at the bottle’s neck) to personalise the entire thing.

On the first floor, you find the World’s best towels, pillowcases, perfumes, candles, and many more of the World’s premier wellness products. It truly is an experience. The first floor is about personalisation; you can personalise anything from your bathrobe to your duvets, body cream jar, candle, and beyond. However, something that everyone loves to personalise is jewellery! You can do that on the first floor, too!

Hi there! I’m Megan, an absolute lover of words, literature, books, stories, anything that has to do with writing, reading, imagining. Because of my passion, I decided to make writing my life, and with that, I decided to study BA Languages at the University of Pretoria and am happy to report that I made my dream come true by graduating and becoming a travel writer. During my final year I wrote for my campus newspaper, the PDBY, where I learned to trust my writing voice. Now, as I sit here writing my petit little bio, I feel more in love with writing than I’ve ever been. Turns out, like much of my personality, my writing can equally showcase both the calm and put-together, as well as the crazy.
