About 20 kilometres from the charming Overberg community of Stanford lies the beautiful Sondagskloof Chalets. They are in the stunning Sandies Glen Valley, surrounded by old Poplar trees, a spring-fed mountain dam, and mountains covered in fynbos. It is a quiet and intimate setting, with just three units available for an authentic detox retreat with your nearest and dearest. Every flat features an outside fire pit for cooking, stargazing and wooden hammocks strung between trees for afternoon naps.

These chic self-catering apartments are powered by solar energy and water from Sondagkloof’s mountain spring and were constructed with environmental consciousness and sustainable building practices in mind. Each chalet has chef-style galley kitchens, cotton percale linens, towels, and opulent, fashionable furnishings. Overlooking the natural dam, a spacious wooden sun deck with braai facilities is ideal for swimming, reading, sunbathing, and meditation. Sondagskloof provides the perfect base for an unbelievably rejuvenating escape!

Constructed using Larch and Spruce wood, their bright, exquisitely furnished two-bedroom chalet is ideal for accommodating large families. Large sliding doors, backed by a spring-fed dam and facing the poplar forest, effortlessly invite the outdoors in. Specific chalet rooms feature a double bunk bed, while others feature queen-size beds, such as the Poplar Chalet.

The open-concept living areas and kitchens are tastefully decorated. The chalets have gas cookers and under-counter refrigerators, which are incredibly easy on the eyes! Most excitingly, however, is the bathroom, which extends onto the deck through a sliding door, allowing for an indoor/outdoor shower.

Every cabin also features an internal fireplace and a wood-fired hot tub, elevating the experience of “forest bathing” to a new level. If you’re interested in staying at Sondagskloof for a digital detox retreat, be sure to book either the Poplar Chalet, with a somewhat secluded forest ambience, the Vlei Chalet, with its spot in the sunshine, manicured lawn, and modern feel, or the Forest Chalet, which is much like the Poplar Chalet, only it has one bedroom and is situated next to a winter running stream!

Sandies Glen is in a remote valley between Stanford and Napier. Among ancient poplar trees, spring-fed dams, and mountains covered in fynbos lies this haven, Sondagskloof, the silent cradle of a burgeoning ethical and environmentally conscious farming revolution. Large and small farms around this area produce a wide range of products with love, including organic vegetables, free-range eggs, goat’s milk cheeses, and proteas, apart from its size. Sondagskloof in Sandies Glen is similar to all the other farms that produce quality products for eager consumers. That is something that the owners, Cathy Marriott and her life partner, Basil Stilwell, know.

They know the farm’s potential to shape the future into a more sustainable one. They have spent the last twenty years carefully crafting their ideal lifestyle, which includes being near nature, healthy, and self-sufficient, but above all, being able to feed their family with delicious food grown locally. This practice extends to their guests’ stay, farm-to-fork! If you enjoy your D.I.Y digital detox retreat, climb out of your comfort zone by harvesting your own food with the owners. It’s a fundamental experience that enhances your stay, life, and knowledge of self-sufficiency!

Hi there! I’m Megan, an absolute lover of words, literature, books, stories, anything that has to do with writing, reading, imagining. Because of my passion, I decided to make writing my life, and with that, I decided to study BA Languages at the University of Pretoria and am happy to report that I made my dream come true by graduating and becoming a travel writer. During my final year I wrote for my campus newspaper, the PDBY, where I learned to trust my writing voice. Now, as I sit here writing my petit little bio, I feel more in love with writing than I’ve ever been. Turns out, like much of my personality, my writing can equally showcase both the calm and put-together, as well as the crazy.
