France

France is a country located, primarily, in Western Europe. It also includes overseas regions and territories in the Americas and the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, giving it one of the largest discontinuous exclusive economic regions in the world. Some of the Enlightenment occurred in French intellectual circles, and major scientific breakthroughs and inventions, such as the discovery of oxygen (1778) and the first hot air balloon carrying passengers (1783), were achieved by French scientists.

Small and picturesque French villages of quality heritage are promoted through the association ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages de France’ (literally “The Most Beautiful Villages of France”). There’s also a “Remarkable Gardens” label, a list of over two hundred gardens classified by the Ministry of Culture. This label is established to promote gardens and parks in France.
