The largest of the two campgrounds at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is the South Rim Campground. On top of that, it’s the only camping spot in the park that is also always open.
RV-powered sewage lines are available at Loop B, and oaks and plants provide some shade over the camping areas. From mid-May to mid-September, you can reserve campsites. For the rest of the year, sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you are looking for free camping in Colorado, this is not the place. In addition to purchasing a permit for Rocky Mountain National Park, you must also pay for each campground individually. However, since your camping registration serves as a substitute for a timed entry permit, you do not need one to enter the park. I know it’s not the same as free camping but at least I’ve shown you a loophole to save money.
5. Silver Bell Campground in Maroon Bells Scenic Area
Silver Bell Campground covers all types of campers. In fact, there are RV sites, walk-in sites and tent-only sites available.
Like many other campsites, Silver Bell also includes a few first-come first-served camping spots. However, they become booked up quickly during the summer.
Silver Bell Campground is located along Maroon Creek, about 7 kilometres from Maroon Lake. As a result, you may drive or walk to the lake. While here, expect to see aspens and the untamed splendour of the mountains.
Although Silver Bell is one of the best places to camp in Colorado, water is not provided. So be sure to carry plenty of it!
